A beautiful location on the Illawarra coast – one of many important indigenous sites – and host to an annual surf competition.
The area around Sandon Point can be accessed by car, walking and bike tracks. The Sandon Point pier is marked by remnant fishing shacks on the northern side of Sandon Point. The pier was used to load coal from the Bulli Mine for transportation to Sydney in the 1900s.
Keeping Culture: Illawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place; Coomaditchie United Artists’ Cooperative
Cultural centres and keeping places are an important way for Aboriginal people to promote, protect and preserve their culture within their own community. Each centre or keeping place is unique. Wollongong has two representative cultural organisations.
