A beautiful heritage listed village in the foothills of the Illawarra escarpment, and site of a number of mines - one still operating.
The area has significant large mining objects located around the area, including coal bins and an egg-ended boiler. The pit-pony stable originally housing the horses used in the Mt Kembla mine and once home to the Vintage Car Club meetings, is being restored by National Parks and Wildlife.
The village hosts the annual Mt Kembla Mining Heritage Festival on the last weekend in July.
The festival events include heritage, family & social history displays, mining history and a quaint heritage cottage display …Music all weekend, art & photographic exhibitions and a grand village parade, special children activities and family fun …The highly respected Mt Kembla Art Prize & Ball is a bi annual festival event. The weekend ends formally with the Lighting of 96 Candles Ceremony.
Gully Cemetery, to commemorate the 96 souls lost in 1902, our worst industrial accident in Australia’s history. This area can be reached from Mt Keira Rd, Picton Rd, Southern Freeway or the Princes Highway and is a lovely tourist drive.
